Why Physical Therapy Hasn’t Worked For You…Yet

March 22, 2022

Imagine what it’s like to be a lifter or athlete that gets injured and goes to see a physical therapist hoping to solve their pain and get back to training…only to not see any results.

This is a frustrating, but often avoidable, situation that many of our past clients have found themselves in. And the worst part is, it’s more common than you would think.

Every single week we talk to people who say that they’ve seen another physical therapist (sometimes 2 or even 3 of them), but haven’t gotten results. We know how time-consuming, annoying, and downright painful this can be, and is one of the reasons why we are so passionate about what we do at Barbell PT and Performance.

The main reason why many lifters and athletes find themselves in these situations is because they choose physical therapists or clinics that aren’t equipped to help them. Most of your typical PT clinics focus on treating the average older adult, who don’t squat heavy weight, throw loaded barbells over their heads, or do Crossfit workouts so demanding they’re lying in a puddle of sweat on the floor afterwards. That type of person is more concerned with being able to go up and down stairs, walk in the grocery store, or play with their grandchildren (all of which are completely valid goals, by the way) than they are getting back to a high level of performance.

So when a lifter or athlete goes to one of these clinics for help, they often find the following:
  • The PTs there don’t understand the demands of their training (and therefore can’t help them modify their training appropriately throughout the rehab process)
  • They see their physical therapist for about 10-15 minutes before they’re handed off to a rehab aide/tech (because PTs in these clinics often have to treat multiple people every hour)
  • They’re given super easy exercises that don’t challenge them (and therefore don’t help them get better in the long term)

Many of our clients have gone to clinics like this 2 to 3 times per week for 8 to 12 weeks, often spending a lot of money out-of-pocket anyways due to co-pays and high deductibles, without getting the results that they’re looking for. So not only are they still in pain, they still can’t do the activities they want to, and they have wasted a lot of time and money in the process.

Luckily, it doesn’t have to be this way! If you want to finally feel like PT has worked for you, and get the results you’re looking for, you need to find a physical therapy clinic that specializes in helping people just like you! PTs in a clinic like this will know exactly how to best help you to reach the goals that you have and finally solve your injury.

When we work with injured lifters and barbell athletes, everything we do is tailor-made to help that type of person. We take our clients through a lifting-specific injury assessment to figure out specifically what is going on, we develop completely customized rehab programs for each client, and we provide expert help on modifying their training (and we work directly with our clients’ coaches if they have them) so that you can continue to do the activities they love while working with us.
